The Perfect Bag

Every adventurous traveler, especially those who travel for a living, are constantly battling to find “the perfect bag”. I never wrote about a product —as I was looking for the right opportunity to do so — and I hope this article serves to someone as an inspiration to change our lives.

Let´s address the bedrock of good design: Must be durable (Quality), needs to be able to hold as much as possible (Capacity), be comfortable to carry (Comfortability), fit traveling restriction measurements (Legality) and above all, easy to handle (Efficiency). Although it seems logical to most, I am stunned at how EVERY bag I ever owned, failed to accomplish them all together.

A few years back, I stood before a vision of the “Da Vinci of bags”—a miracle in design and aesthetics —that I thought would change my life forever. It was a California-based American brand that manufactured, at the time, the only backpack-to-trolley hybrid ( with a smooth conversion design) available on the market. I never understood why it took the industry decades to produce such an object, which most kids of the eighties (like me) still remember carrying to school. As most travelers know, during a long journey, big chunks of time are wasted in airports, commuting, or simply waiting in hotel lobbies and train stations. The trolley feature gives the traveler a “back-break,” softening the physical toll of carrying a substantial part of our home across the world.

Most backpacks that transform into trolleys—even those we carried in school—have a major structural issue: they are incredibly uncomfortable when not being rolled. They usually have a central pole that pushes against your scapulae, which becomes quite painful after some time. This California brand, however, achieved a design that was surprisingly comfortable. I could have kissed the floor in celebration of my discovery and purchased it immediately. It was over $300, but if it was life-changing, so I said “rock on.” I have spent far-more on objects that provided no value and ended up in the piles of clutter at home (which I unsuccessfully promised myself every winter I will clean).

The fantasy lasted…
