The Erótica of Power

I thought to be the only one, through puberty, to be aware of how sexually charged the aspect of war was. In my long study hours, I sought—through cinema—to better understand, or perhaps more graphically visualize, the social truth of the conflict. While the simple perpetuation of war bored me, an awakening curiosity grew in me, in regards to the day-to-day lives of those who were either responsible or victims. I was interested in their intimacy, the ambitions, the desire… the secret lives of people who, beyond that bureaucratic political expression coercing them in order to stay alive, made them human. Perhaps the reason why The Diary of Anne FrankThe Aleph, or Sophie’s World really had shaken me; they brought me closer to the feeling of war, much more than the demagogically saturated message advertised by both winner-or-loser propaganda.

One of the documentaries gathered the statements of German women raped systematically by the Russian army. “I prefer a Russian in my belly than an American over my head.” With those grisly words, a macabre unknown universe emerged from the erotica of power of the machine of war, and rolled its red carpet right before me.

Another film (which I have never wished to find again) showed me the secret parties of the underworld of Berlin plunged into the Nazi cataclysm. The footage portrayed, with hypocritical elegance, the perversions of those who—along the day—tortured and executed the ones which at night, formed the cast of their fantasies: the homosexuals. The scenes showed their off-duty hours, spent enjoying or, at times, raping the most vulnerable: the homosexuals. These “boys of the dark” were the officer´s toys, a direct result of their own sexual repression. I confess without pride (but with the urge to recount a reality I have contrasted and share with many)
