PANGENEA

In a world moving faster than ever before, a young pilot wakes up in Africa in the midst of a regional nuclear crisis. Following his instincts, he escapes across six continents to uncover the truth behind his military orders and find out who is really in command. It is a story about connections, trust, and everyday issues seen through the eyes of people who experience the world but have no say in how it works. Mr. M will have no choice but to trust strangers if he wants to survive and, eventually, take orders from only one man: himself.

This book was born from a 900-day peregrination across the globe. It was inspired by the writer's personal encounters with people while living abroad, such as families in the Amazon jungle, an artist in the frozen lands of Patagonia, a group of circus performers in Japan, and soldiers in Kenya. Those hours spent talking to and interviewing people, politicians, public figures, creatives, and specifically military men and women around the world, helped shape the story. The narrative was further developed through conversations with scientists and artists, including their unique interactions, and particularly by the impact of a trip to Mombasa. There, at the World Nuclear Summit, the author met the managers of ICAN and IPPNW, both Nobel Peace Prize laureates. Deeply moved by these experiences, the author crafted a fictional narrative exploring what could result from a catastrophic chain of poor decisions. Many characters and events are inspired by real people, aiming to pull back the curtain on the behind-the-scenes maneuvering of political, military, and private interests. Four years in the making, this novel serves as a cautionary tale of a potential future if we do not change our way of thinking about power and success.

"I was fascinated by the adventure, the stories of people, and especially the perspective of the pilot: someone who possesses absolute freedom, someone who witnesses a different reality happening far above our heads. In the process of writing, I became a pilot myself. I wanted to feel it. I discovered the rush and that helped to pace the story." — Alexandre Caruso
